Acid Reflux is a common digestive condition that causes burning and pain in the lower chest area, also known as heartburn. It occurs when acid from the stomach returns to the throat through the food pipe, causing irritation in the stomach and throat, also known as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) (Gastroesophageal reflux). Acid reflux can affect infants and children as well as adults. Children under 12 years of age usually do not experience heartburn.
What is Acid Reflux?
Hydrochloric acid in the stomach helps digest food and destroy harmful bacteria, also known as digestive juices. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) in the food pipe is a side-opening valve that opens when food is ingested. When the esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly, the digestive juices and stomach contents return to the esophagus through the food pipe, causing the acid to enter your esophagus. This problem is called acid reflux.
Causes of Acid Reflux
Acid Reflux is caused by an abdominal abnormality (malfunction), which may be the main cause of hiatal hernia. It is when the acid or food of the stomach and esophageal sphincter (LES) comes up through the diaphragm, the diaphragm separates our stomach and chest from each other. The diaphragm helps to store acid in our stomach. But if you have a hiatal hernia, then the acid comes to the esophagus, causing acid reflux disease.
